Nearly two weeks after the passing of Georgina Cooper, known by her married name Smith, it has been revealed that her death was the result of a medical emergency.
According to a statement provided to Daily Mail by a hospital spokesperson, Cooper succumbed to cirrhosis of the liver and internal bleeding after her organs failed.
“The doctors did what they could, but because of her condition, there was not much that could be done,” the spokesperson shared.
Due to Cooper’s well-documented medical history, the coroner determined that an autopsy was unnecessary. Following her passing, her body was transferred from Venizelou Hospital in Heraklion to another facility within the city before being flown back to Britain.
The 46-year-old British supermodel was on vacation with her new husband, Nigel, on the Greek island of Kos on October 21 when she became ill. She was initially admitted to the local hospital, but her condition worsened rapidly.
Due to the severity of her illness, she was airlifted to a more advanced facility in Crete, where she spent five days in intensive care before passing away. Her loved ones and fans continue to mourn her loss.
Cooper first gained attention in the 1990s. She was discovered at 13, and by 15, she was already in the spotlight, appearing in a Bon Jovi music video. Her gap-toothed smile made her stand out, and she became a favorite of top photographers, including Corinne Day.

Carole White, a former model and the head of Premier Model Management, also shared warm memories of Cooper. Reflecting on Cooper’s early days in the industry, White said, “She was a walk-in and she was so much fun. When she was young, she made a lot of money and she had this very edgy streak that was of the time. Everyone found the gap between her teeth quite amazing.”

Throughout her career, Cooper modeled for big names like Burberry, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney. She also graced the covers of “Vogue” and “The Face,” becoming an icon of that era.

Despite her success, Cooper faced health problems in recent years. Her former agent, Dean Goodman, shared that she had struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic and was often in and out of hospitals. Despite everything, she stayed optimistic and looked forward to the future.
“She loved Greece and was so happy to return there with her new husband,” Goodman said. “It’s heartbreaking that she passed away just a fortnight ago. She had just married and was looking forward to her life.”
Goodman also posted a heartfelt message online, “I’m in total shock, and talked to her not long ago to meet up after she just got married. I will miss her immensely. I will never forget you and always love you, see you on the other side ❤️ 😘 😥 she was my girl!!! 💔”
Following his first tribute, Goodman once again took to social media to share his grief and fond memories of the late supermodel. “Georgie girl, I still can’t believe you have gone, seeing all the outpour of love people had for you is so touching!” Goodman wrote.

Reflecting on a cherished moment from her career, he added, “I wanted to post this story I booked you on for Vogue UK with Corinne Day Dec 2003, I remember Kylie was on the cover in a martini glass, it was the last shoot you did with Corinne for Vogue I think.”

Goodman also recounted a lighthearted memory from a Vogue party at Kensington Palace’s Orangery, where the two shared laughter. “We were a little tipsy… and we saw the picture blown up on the wall, and neither of us recognised you… SO many good times together. RIP MY DARLING GIRL, Love always, you will be remembered for the ICON that you were! xxxx.”
In another touching post, Goodman bid his “last goodbye” to his beloved friend, sharing a selection of touching photos that showcased her life beyond modeling.

“Here are just a few memories over the years when I was an agent! Some private personal shots 💔 they show my George the person, not model… NEVER FORGOTTEN,” he expressed. “Sleep well George, and till we meet again! Love always 💖. P.s the 90s/00s were fun!”
The fashion world is still mourning the loss of Tatjana Patitz, another iconic supermodel who died nearly two years ago at age 56, after a battle with cancer. Patitz, like Cooper, was celebrated for her lasting impact on the industry and was remembered fondly by her peers.
Many in the fashion world expressed their sorrow upon learning about Cooper’s passing. Models Erin O’Connor, Helena Christensen, Jade Parfitt, and Jodie Kidd shared their grief online.

A devastated Parfitt posted, “Goodbye beautiful girl 🤍. One of the funniest and naughtiest friends. Sending love to her son, family, and friends. Gone too soon 🤍.”
O’Connor added, “Gorgeous George… Shocked and heartbroken. You were always kind and funny, Georgina. We admired and loved you so much.”

Cooper had a deep connection to Greece, especially the island of Kos. She visited often and was close to the owners of the Marianna Hotel, where she stayed.
“She came here in July for her honeymoon and again in October for a holiday,” said a local source. “She was talking about coming back in May because she wanted to find somewhere to live and maybe start a business.”

The Marianna Hotel shared their own tribute, “Goodbye to our beautiful friend, Georgina Cooper. We will always have you in our hearts with your bright smile, your caring and kind soul. You loved Kos, and Kos loved you. Rest in peace.”
Outside of modeling, Cooper was a devoted mother. She often spoke about how she put her son, Sonny, first, even if it meant stepping back from her career.
“After I had my son I just couldn’t bear to leave him alone and I wanted to be there for him,” she once said. “I tried to continue modeling but it broke my heart when I had to leave him for work. My life was at a crossroads and I decided that Sonny came first.”
Cooper’s family is deeply grieving. Her sister-in-law, Tracey Wallace, called Cooper’s death a “tragedy.” “My partner Shane was Georgina’s brother. It’s very sad,” Wallace shared.

Cooper’s life was full of achievements, lasting friendships, and a deep love for her family. Her passing has left a void in the fashion industry and among her loved ones.
However, her legacy as a pioneering model and a cherished friend will continue to be remembered by her well-wishers.
